A family of five, including three children, was found dead in a Utah home on Tuesday, and another 17-year-old was taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds, police said.
Those killed were two adults, an 11-year-old boy and two girls, ages 9 and 2, West Valley Police Department spokeswoman Rosean Vainuk said. It was not immediately clear how they died.
They were found at a home in West Valley City, about nine miles southwest of Salt Lake City. The boy was found in the garage.
“It's absolutely terrifying. This is certainly going to be a huge burden for the investigators in this case,” Vainuk said at an evening press conference.
She added that authorities do not believe the suspect is at large and that the shooting was “isolated to this home.”
The 17-year-old is “injured and hospitalized, so there are some challenges in communicating with him and getting more information,” Vainuku said.
Authorities said a relative called police Monday after unsuccessful attempts to contact the 38-year-old woman who lived at the home. Police officers went to the house, but no one answered.
They returned Tuesday afternoon after the same relative reported finding the 17-year-old boy in the garage.
Vainuku said police are searching the home, speaking with neighbors and looking for evidence from doorbell cameras.
