Five Valladolid supporters receive suspended prison sentences for committing a hate crime against Vinícius Júnior.

Landmark Ruling on Racism in Football

Five Valladolid fans who directed racist abuse at Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr. have received suspended prison sentences. Vinicius called it a significant ruling that categorizes such racist insults in La Liga as hate crimes, specifically within stadiums.

The incident occurred in December 2022 during a match against Real Valladolid, where Vinicius faced racial slurs from the crowd. The individuals involved were identified through social media footage and images.

A court in Valladolid found the fan guilty, sentencing him to one year in prison, which was suspended on the condition that he is banned from stadiums for three years. Additionally, he faced a fine of up to 1,620 euros (£1,364).

This ruling has been praised by La Liga, being described as “an unprecedented milestone in the fight against racism in Spanish sports.”

Previously, courts treated racist chants merely as crimes against moral integrity. This new ruling, however, emphasizes that these actions are indeed hate crimes, reinforcing the message that intolerance shouldn’t have a place in football.

This sentiment was supported by Real Madrid, and there have been recent court decisions addressing racist abuse at various stadiums across Spain. However, there’s a feeling that this ruling from Valladolid holds a unique significance. “This time, the designation of hate crimes truly acknowledges the severity of such behaviors,” Vinicius remarked.

The 24-year-old has been a vocal advocate against racism in La Liga, having faced abuse over ten times at different venues throughout Spain. Last year, he spoke about the toll that persistent racial insults have taken on him, noting how they dampened his passion for the game.

In recent months, Vinicius’s efforts have led to some important developments. Last year, Spanish police arrested four men accused of orchestrating an online hate campaign against him, and in 2023, four others were detained for hanging a Vinicius statue from a bridge in Madrid.

In addressing the ongoing struggle against racism, he mentioned in November that while he is committed to this fight, “we cannot possibly tackle everything that Black people have endured.”
