Last week, Democrats spent considerable energy criticizing President Joe Biden’s bold move during his State of the Union address to characterize Laken Riley’s alleged murderer as “unlawful.”
You know, in contrast to the outrage over the murder itself and the policies that allowed the suspect to roam across the U.S. border in the first place.
Of course, in an interview with MSNBC’s Jonathan Capehart over the weekend, Biden politely walked back his use of the word “illegal,” saying, “I shouldn’t have used the word ‘illegal.'” It’s ‘undocumented.'” Capehart asked Biden if he regretted using the term “illegal,” to which Biden replied, “Yes.”
It wasn’t always like that.
Let’s take a look back at another MSNBC clip The comment has been trending on social media ever since the left was thrown into turmoil over Biden’s horrifying “illegal” comments.
This comes after Biden, then a U.S. senator, told MSNBC’s Chris Matthews in 2006 that “illegal aliens” must, among other requirements, “learn to speak English” in order to reside in the United States. This is what I said.
In the clip, Matthews starts things off with the words, “Please count.” three In one question, Biden asked, “Is there a Democratic position to stop illegal immigration, punish those who illegally underpay people, and give hope to people who are in the country illegally and who are in the country illegally?” Do you want to come here now? ”
After several back-and-forths, Matthews asked Biden, “Can we intimidate employers in this country into not hiring illegal aliens, whether they’re farmworkers or housewives? It’s expensive, and it would be a great shame if you were caught.” Your family, and you, could possibly be fined…even death?”
Biden responded: “Absolutely we can and that’s what we should do. I think we should do that.”
From there, Biden said Democrats understand that “undocumented people … must have the means to participate in the agreement. This is not amnesty.” He also says, “They have to pay a fine, learn to speak English and pass a test.”
Matthews echoed the importance of encouraging undocumented immigrants to learn English, even adding, “English has the potential to unite this country, and has always done so in the past.”
Biden also said, “I can’t think of any other country, including Switzerland or Canada, that has two host languages and is doing so well.”
Matthews says having multiple languages in the United States “divides us. We can’t speak to each other.”
Ah, times have changed. Check it out:
