Flávio Bolsonaro Arrives in Miami Amid Legal Fears
Flávio Bolsonaro, a former presidential candidate in Brazil, has landed in Miami. This move comes as speculation rises that the left-leaning President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva might pursue a legal campaign against him. Just recently, Bolsonaro’s location was unknown, and he did not comply with a Brazilian Supreme Federal Court order to surrender his passports.
Reports suggest that Bolsonaro took a route through Argentina and Ecuador before reaching Miami, continuing to resist acknowledging Lula’s election victory amidst allegations of electoral fraud.
Accompanied by his wife and two daughters, Flávio arrived at the Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport on Wednesday morning, as noted by various news sources.
He has consistently refused to accept the election results after Lula secured a victory with a margin of about 4.4 million votes. This margin was aided by an extension of voting hours in Brazil, ordered by a justice appointed by Lula, who had also previously served as Lula’s personal attorney.
According to Argentine immigration officials, the Bolsonaro family crossed into Argentina by land late Tuesday and later took a private flight believed to have made a brief stop in Guayaquil, Ecuador, before heading to Miami.
Last Monday, a Brazilian court mandated that Bolsonaro surrender all his passports by noon the following day. His Brazilian passports have since been canceled, but reports indicate he possesses an Italian passport that facilitated his entry into the U.S.
Lula criticized Bolsonaro’s departure from Brazil as “shameful.”
The U.S. State Department has indicated it will grant visas to Bolsonaro and his family. A spokesperson from the Department of Homeland Security confirmed that they underwent inspections by U.S. Customs and Border Protection upon arrival but were released afterward.
Former President Donald Trump has expressed skepticism over the fairness of the election, describing it as “strange” and “terrible.” Trump’s comments come alongside claims that Brazilian officials are unjustly targeting Jair Bolsonaro, Flávio’s father, who also briefly sought refuge in Florida following his electoral defeat in 2022.
Federal officials imposed sanctions on Justice Alexandre de Moraes, accusing him of leading a politically motivated crackdown against U.S. and Brazilian citizens. Flávio Bolsonaro questioned the implications for his father, pondering if the situation would differ had he won the election.
Meanwhile, Jair Bolsonaro was sentenced to 27 years in prison following his electoral defeat and has since been placed under house arrest due to health concerns. He had previously survived a serious stabbing attack during his 2018 campaign.
When reached out for comments, the Brazilian Embassy referred inquiries to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Responses from both Bolsonaro’s office and the White House remain pending.
