Central Texas Communities Face Recovery After Devastating Flash Floods
Central Texas has recently been grappling with the aftermath of severe flash floods that tragically claimed the lives of at least 119 people, particularly during the July 4 holiday weekend. The devastation has left local businesses and communities searching for assistance as they begin to recover.
Accuweather highlighted that the economic toll from this disaster could be between $1.8 and $22 billion, a staggering estimate that underscores the scale of the impact.
Mindy Wendell, who leads the Carville Regional Chamber of Commerce, spoke on “Craman Countdown,” emphasizing the financial significance of the camping industry in Kerrville, estimating it generates over $40 million annually. Wendell reflected on the challenge for families and employees in this sector, given the widespread destruction. “Tourism is our top industry,” she noted, and employed over 1,100 locals. This is more than just numbers; it affects real lives and families.
She also mentioned that community leaders are actively trying to assess the needs of local businesses, stating they are literally “on the streets right now,” checking in to see how they can help in the aftermath of the flooding.
The Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce launched a “Reconstruction and Recovery Fund” to build on these support efforts, with Wendell confirming their plans to start transferring the donations received earlier this week.
It’s heartening to see contributions pouring in from various sectors. Organizations like Home Depot, Walmart, Procter & Gamble, and others are stepping up to aid the affected areas. Notably, Raising Cane’s has committed $1 million to the Red Cross for recovery efforts, showcasing how businesses can come together during a crisis.
As Wendell candidly pointed out, none of them could have predicted being in this situation just a week ago. But, in the face of adversity they’re coming together, doing what they can. She mentioned, “You need prayers, gift cards, and perhaps in that order,” when asked about additional support needed. The community knows that every bit counts, and gift cards can provide immediate relief.
