Florence Pugh Discusses Experiences with Intimacy Coordinators
Florence Pugh is candid about her experiences, particularly regarding the complexities of filming intimate scenes. Recently, on the “Louis Theroux Podcast,” the “Thunderbolts” star reflected on her time on set, sharing both positive and awkward encounters with intimacy coordinators.
“I’ve had a great experience with the intimacy coordinators,” Pugh mentioned, although she has faced challenges in the past. She recounted a situation that felt uncomfortable, without going into specific details about names or projects. “It was very weird, and I felt like I wanted to fit in but, honestly, it didn’t help me at all,” she reflected.
Pugh’s filmography is quite varied—she has acted in everything from indie dramas to major productions. Her experience has spanned the introduction of intimacy coordinators in the industry.
“I’m confident and comfortable in my body,” she stated, emphasizing her ability to voice her feelings. However, she recognized that there were inappropriate demands placed on her during some scenes. Recently, she has begun to appreciate the role of a good coordinator in elevating a scene and safeguarding the actors involved.
“Working with skilled people on sex scenes made things clearer for me,” Pugh explained.
She elaborated, saying, “The objective is to really understand intimacy—what kind of interactions it involves.” When done right, these scenes blend seamlessly into the overall narrative rather than feeling like mere checkboxes to tick off.
“With a well-experienced coordinator, I realized, ‘Oh, this is the element I was missing: not just filming the scenes but grasping the nuance of intimacy,'” she noted. While some coordinators are effective, others may not be as beneficial. Yet, through her experiences, Pugh has learned how crucial a good coordinator can be.
Pugh’s reflections come on the heels of fellow actor Andrew Garfield’s comments regarding their own experience filming “We Live in Time.” He admitted that he and Pugh got a bit carried away during their shooting of intimate scenes, missing the director’s cue to stop.
“We were really into it, more than we expected,” Garfield shared, recalling how he hadn’t heard the word “cut” and was surprisingly relieved when he did.
