Florida Man Scheduled for Execution Next Month
A Florida man, convicted of fatally stabbing a married couple during a robbery, is scheduled to be executed next month. This event could further increase the state’s already record-high executions this year.
Victor Tony Jones, 64, faces execution on September 30 at a Florida prison near Stark. This death warrant was signed on Friday by Governor Ron DeSantis. For context, Florida witnessed its 11th execution this year on Thursday, when 59-year-old Curtis Wyndham was put to death via lethal injection. There’s also another execution planned for 63-year-old David Pittman on September 17.
This year, Florida has executed more individuals than any other state, with Texas and South Carolina trailing behind, each having executed four people. To give some perspective, Florida’s previous record stood at eight executions in 2014, which was after the state resumed the death penalty in 1976.
So far in 2025, the United States has seen 30 executions, exceeding last year’s total of 25. The highest number of executions in a single year was 35 in 2014.
Jones was found guilty in 1993 of two counts of first-degree murder and received a death sentence. He was also convicted of two armed robbery counts. The incident leading to his conviction occurred in December 1990 when he, as a new employee at a Miami-Dade business owned by Matilda and Jacob Nestle, stabbed a woman in the neck and a man in the chest.
In a dramatic turn during the incident, Mr. Nestle managed to reach his office and shot at Jones five times with a .22 caliber pistol, hitting him once in the forehead.
At the scene, Jones was discovered with stolen money and personal belongings from the Nestles.
The Florida Supreme Court is preparing to hear an appeal from Jones’ attorneys, who are working to prevent his execution. They are also planning to seek an appeal from the U.S. Supreme Court.
