Possible Snowfall in the South This Weekend
This weekend, there’s a chance for snow in the South, with forecasts suggesting the possibility of snowflakes across the region.
The FOX Prediction Center is watching an increasing likelihood of heavy snowfall along the southern corridor, potentially affecting areas from the Florida Panhandle through Georgia, the Carolinas, and Virginia.
“It’s a bit early to be too certain about this, but we could see snow along the coastline starting Sunday and possibly into early next week,” said FOX Meteorologist Ian Oliver on Wednesday.
Any snowfall is expected to begin Saturday night and may continue into Sunday.
While it’s hard to predict how much might fall, snow removal could be necessary, and it would certainly impact travel in regions that typically don’t face winter weather.
Current trends from various computer models indicate that significant snow is possible across the South, with projections showing increasing snowfall amounts.
After an initial round of arctic air that could even freeze Florida’s iguanas this week and lead to cold weather warnings across parts of the Southeast through Thursday, a stronger cold front is anticipated to move south from Canada, which could interact with moisture coming up from the Gulf Coast.
“This dip in the jet stream is what makes this possible,” Oliver explained.
This combination of moisture and freezing temperatures could lead to snow affecting parts of the northern Gulf Coast as early as Saturday night.
Furthermore, this added moisture might allow snow to keep accumulating in areas of northern Florida, southern Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina through Sunday.
There are still some uncertainties, though. It remains to be seen if a low-pressure system strong enough to bring snow will form off the southeast coast.
For now, folks in the South should stay alert for potential impacts this weekend.
The FOX Prediction Center continues to monitor the situation, so it’s a good idea to keep an eye on the latest forecasts.
