Trump Administration’s Immigration Facility Plans in Florida

The Trump administration is channeling funds into various projects in Florida, including a significant initiative to transform the Everglades airfield—an area teeming with swamps and crocodiles—into a large immigration detention center. Florida’s GOP Attorney General, James Usmier, has labeled this endeavor “Crocodile Alcatraz,” proposing it as an ideal location since escape options for detainees would be virtually nonexistent.

Kristi Noem from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has confirmed that most of the funding will come from FEMA’s shelter and services programs. In a statement, she emphasized, “Under President Trump’s leadership, we are rapidly working to offer effective and innovative solutions for addressing the expulsion of criminally illegal aliens.” She expressed optimism about expanding facilities and bed space soon, thanks to Florida’s collaboration.

Contrasting this with the previous administration’s stance, Noem pointed out that the Biden administration plans to use FEMA resources to house illegal immigrants in more luxurious settings, such as the Roosevelt Hotel—which has a controversial history of sheltering gang members responsible for violence.

A spokesperson for Uthmeier has communicated with media outlets to underscore the partnership between his office and DHS. Uthmeier stated, “We stand firm with President Trump and Secretary Noem in their efforts to tackle the illegal immigration challenge. Alligator Alcatraz and other facilities in Florida are vital to this mission. We will remain steadfast in ensuring Florida’s safety and freedom.”

This new facility is projected to cost around $450 million annually and will provide approximately 5,000 beds for illegal immigrants under federal detention. Construction has already begun on the Wannial Catraz, which will utilize large tents and various facilities. Uthmeier has previously noted, “People are leaving, but all they have to look forward to are crocodiles and pythons. There’s nowhere to escape.”

Unlike many states that have enacted laws hindering cooperation with immigration enforcement, Florida maintains a supportive relationship with federal law enforcement agencies. Republican Governor Ron DeSantis has previously signed legislation that prohibits sanctuary cities and bolsters immigration enforcement throughout the state.
