Florida Attorney General announcement The lawsuit against Snapchat after the popular social media platform is said to have failed to comply with state laws to protect children from online predators.
The law signed by Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis ordered social media companies to restrict access to children under the age of 14, but Snapchat continues to allow full access to minors.
“You can’t say enough to scare you about the dangers of being there. There are sick people out there and they use these social media applications to find their way in your home and reach out to your child.
“Child predators are using these dangerous devices here to reach their children,” Attorney General James Usmier said Tuesday.
Litigation say Its Snapchat exposes minor users to destructive “addictive features.”
“I can’t say enough to scare you about the dangers of the parents in the house there,” he added. “There are sick people out there. They’re finding their way to your home to reach your home and reach out to your kids. They’re deceiving, luring them in, preying on them, they’re trying to set up a meeting, they’re not going to ask for photos.”
He said that while other platforms may face similar lawsuits, Snapchat “occasionally one of the worst criminals.”
Uthmeier has linked unlimited access to social media to other social illnesses.
“We’ve seen an increase in mental health issues, an increase in suicides,” he said. “Children react and change in very dangerous ways when they spend hours on these platforms.
