Florida Executes Man for 2008 Murder
On Tuesday evening, Florida executed a man convicted of the violent rape and murder of a mother who was kidnapped in 2008. This tragic case involved Dennis Amber Lee, a married woman and mother of two young boys. While bound in her car, she managed to call 911 for help.
Michael Lee King, 54, was given a lethal injection at a state prison near Stark and was pronounced dead at 6:13 p.m. King had been sentenced to death for first-degree murder, sexual battery, and kidnapping related to the shocking January 2008 killing of Lee, who was only 21 years old.
The U.S. Supreme Court denied King’s appeal the day before his execution.
Lee was abducted while leaving her Northport home with her children. King, who was driving through the neighborhood, saw Lee as she trimmed her toddler’s hair in their backyard. It truly is chilling to think that while she was just going about her day, a predator was searching for victims nearby.
According to prosecutors, King took Lee to his residence where he assaulted her. Later, while still restrained, she was taken to a relative’s home to borrow items like a flashlight and shovel. Remarkably, despite her precarious situation, she managed to grab King’s cell phone and call 911, pleading for her life and expressing her desire to see her family again.
Sadly, her life was cut short after King shot her in the face and buried her. His vehicle, a green 1994 Chevrolet Camaro, was pulled over by law enforcement shortly thereafter because it matched the description noted in another 911 call that reported hearing screams from a car at a traffic light.
Authorities later found Lee’s belongings in King’s vehicle and home. In response to this case, the Denise Amber Lee Act was established months following her death to enhance the training of 911 operators, although multiple calls on the day of her abduction, including one from her husband, didn’t prompt immediate help.
It’s unfortunate that communications issues and other failures resulted in a delay in providing assistance. The aftermath of this crime not only devastated a family but also highlighted serious flaws in emergency response systems.
