In response to a tragic truck accident last week involving illegal immigrants, all truck weighing stations in Florida have been designated as ice checkpoints, officials announced on Monday.
State Attorney General James Usmierer referred to the incident as “a serious tragedy” during a press conference held in Live Oak. He shared the news of a new collaboration between federal agencies and Florida’s Agricultural Inspection Bureau.
Usmierer pointed out that “individuals who should not be eligible for a driver’s license are driving recklessly.” This reckless behavior has resulted in tragic losses, with recent incidents claiming three lives due to the actions of those who have lost their commercial driver’s license (CDL).
Reports suggest that Haljinder Singh, a 28-year-old from India, managed to evade detection in the U.S. for six years. He allegedly executed illegal U-turns while driving an 18-wheeler on the Florida Turnpike on August 12. Following the incident, he fled to California but was later apprehended and brought back to Florida for trial.
Under this new measure, immigration enforcement will occur at all checkpoints managed by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services along the major interstate highways.
A new checkpoint is also set to be established along Highway 231, close to the Florida-Alabama border. There are plans to add more pullover lanes in North Florida. Additionally, advanced X-ray technology will allow staff to inspect the contents of trucks as they arrive at the stations.
Latest developments on the illegal immigrant truck driver incident
Uthmeier shared during a briefing that another undocumented individual was recently arrested while operating a commercial vehicle in Bay County, located in northwest Florida.
Roberto Carlos Vergara has been detained and is currently under an ice hold, according to Usmierer.
He expressed concerns over the number of illegal immigrants driving large commercial vehicles, stating that it poses a safety risk to American families every day. Highlighting the significance of the actions carried out by agricultural law enforcement, he noted the crucial need to protect citizens from the dangers stemming from an open border crisis.
