A couple from Florida described an incredible experience earlier this month when they were struck by lightning during a walk in Winter Haven, leading to a dramatic rescue captured on video by bystanders. Aaron Walenga, 48, and his wife Clare, 43, shared their terrifying story, detailing how, in an instant, everything changed.
“I couldn’t move how I wanted to,” Aaron recalled. “I was trying to get to Clare and talk, but I couldn’t really manage.” The couple was out on the evening of September 2, after leaving their three children at a church youth group meeting, which they used as a sort of date night.
While strolling on the West Orange Trail, a sudden storm approached, and a lightning strike caught them unawares. Aaron later described waking up in pain and confusion, initially thinking they had been hit by a vehicle. “I thought maybe a car just ran us over from behind because getting struck by lightning… well, that’s not something you really consider,” he said.
Despite his disorientation, Aaron witnessed bystanders performing CPR on his wife, Clare, who had become unresponsive. Thankfully, four good Samaritans acted swiftly—calling for help and attending to Clare until first responders arrived about ten minutes later. Witnesses later informed the couple that Clare had turned blue and ceased breathing for several minutes.
At the hospital, doctors found that Aaron had multiple injuries, including fractures and burns, while Clare faced serious health scares, like brain bleeds and heart damage. Both of their conditions miraculously improved within just a couple of days. Clare mentioned, “We’re seeing miracle after miracle. There are too many divine things in this unfortunate circumstance to ignore.” Her memory loss resolved within two days as well.
Post-incident, the couple emphasized their gratitude and support from their local community. They’ve even formed a bond with the individuals who assisted during the ordeal, and they plan to revisit the trail soon.
Reflecting on the kindness extended to them, Aaron remarked, “It’s really humbling to know that people genuinely care. It shows how the church is really about the people surrounding you, not just a place.” Throughout the whole experience, the pair maintained their faith, which they credit for helping them remain hopeful and strong, never once asking, “Why me?” as they faced the unexpected.
