Sheila Chafferus McCormick Remains Registered for Re-Election Amid Controversy

Sheila Chafferus McCormick continues to be registered for re-election, even though she recently resigned while facing both Congressional and federal investigations regarding allegations of misusing disaster relief funds for personal benefit.

Interestingly, on April 17, just a week before her resignation, she submitted her candidacy as a Democrat to the Florida Department of State.

Her official resignation was made public on Tuesday.

This situation raises some eyebrows about whether Chafferus McCormick still thinks she can secure a political position in light of the scrutiny surrounding her.

As of now, her office hasn’t responded to requests for clarification.

Chafferus McCormick’s resignation coincides with the House Ethics Committee’s upcoming recommendations regarding her alleged misuse of disaster relief funds, which are said to have been funneled into her campaign through various companies.

Investigators found that she had committed 18 violations related to campaign finance, in addition to five counts of false financial disclosures, three counts of misappropriation of public funds, and one count of lacking candor.

She remains adamant about her innocence, asserting that she will fight the allegations outside of her political role.

“This process has not been fair. The Ethics Committee dismissed my new attorney’s reasonable request for preparation time. I just can’t let my rights be overlooked and my reputation damaged,” Chafferus McCormick stated in a press release.

She added, “I have decided to step back from these political battles and focus on advocating for my neighbors in Florida’s 20th Congressional District. I hereby resign from the 119th Congress, effective immediately.”

With her resignation, the authority of the Ethics Commission has been suspended; however, federal charges against her are still pending. Notably, she was charged by a Miami grand jury in November for allegedly embezzling $5 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

So far, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has not disclosed when a special election will be held to fill her congressional seat.
