The vice chair of the Democratic Party in Florida, who had intentions to run for the state House, was discovered dead at her residence on Wednesday morning, leading to her husband’s arrest on domestic violence charges.
Nancy Metayer Bowen, 38, who served as the deputy mayor of Coral Springs, passed away at her home earlier today.
Authorities reported that her husband, Stephen Bowen, 40, was apprehended in connection with what is being labeled a “domestic violence incident.” Further details surrounding the circumstances of Metayer Bowen’s death remain unclear, as police have yet to provide more information.
A first-generation Haitian-American, Metayer Bowen had an impressive political career prior to her role in Florida. After completing her studies at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, she interned with former U.S. Senator Bill Nelson and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, along with former President Barack Obama, according to her LinkedIn profile.
She briefly stepped away from politics to focus on charitable work in Haiti before returning to Florida, where she began her career with Broward County as a program manager for the Junior Sustainability Management Program.
Metayer Bowen quickly advanced in various nonprofit organizations and founded her own while undertaking multiple government roles, as per her LinkedIn overview.
In late 2024, she was appointed Deputy Mayor of Coral Springs and promised to work towards creating a brighter, more inclusive future. Later that year, she collaborated with former President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign and shifted to support Kamala Harris’s campaign as the poll director for the Florida Caribbean region after Biden exited the race.
In March 2025, she was named Vice Chair of Haitian American Voter Engagement for the Florida Democratic Party.
The family of Metayer Bowen issued a statement highlighting her integrity and compassion, noting her commitment to bringing people together and creating positive change in her community. They described her as a source of strength and love, always prioritizing others.
Florida Congressman Jared Moskowitz recognized her contributions in a statement, expressing sorrow over her passing just weeks before she was set to announce her congressional campaign. He expressed that she was an incredible individual who constantly fought for her community and was always seeking assistance.
Moskowitz also reflected on the recent loss of Metayer Bowen’s youngest brother, Donovan Joshua Lee Metayer, who passed away in December 2025 after struggling with schizophrenia and was a survivor of the Parkland High School shooting.
The investigation into Metayer Bowen’s death is ongoing.
