Florida Democrats Dominate Fundraising in Crunch Time, Leave GOP Lags in the Dust in Special Election Showdown

The two Democrats running in special elections to fill Florida’s vacant home seats are gaining momentum, raising more than $15 million from January to March.

Democrat Gay Valimont, running for the First Congressional District, and Josh Weil, running for the Sixth Congressional District, have combined to raise that total, according to a Federal Election Commission report.

Valimont raised $6.4 million, while Weil raised $8.9 million.

This is significantly higher than their Republican opponents, who raised $1.2 million and $560,000, respectively.

The Democratic National Committee has announced it will invest in the races to help state Democrats build “full-time organizational capabilities.” The investment will fund voter protection programs and over 200 vote watchers and greeters on Election Day.

Despite the Republicans’ strong history in these districts, observers will watch the April 1 election to see if Democrats can at least break into the margin, suggesting an increase in enthusiasm, even if they are favorites to win.
