A Florida sheriff's deputy is accused of shooting and killing his girlfriend while he was teaching her how to clean a gun, according to reports.
Marion County Sheriff's Deputy Leslie Boileau had been drinking and was showing his girlfriend, 25-year-old Polina Wright, how to clean an AR-style rifle on Thursday when a loaded bullet from the gun discharged into her forehead, police said. Ocala Police Department.
The deputy who had the gun told police that his late girlfriend had asked him how to clean a gun right before he showed her how to disassemble and clean a rifle and a 9mm handgun. Fox 13 Reported.
They then pointed their guns at each other.
According to the outlet, the couple had just returned home from dinner, where they had each had three margaritas, when Boyleault noticed some gun maintenance products he had recently ordered and his girlfriend asked him about his gun maintenance habits.
According to the arrest report, Boyleault said he grabbed the rifle and fired one round into the air.
“During the second blank firing attempt, Boyleault forgot to have a loaded magazine in the rifle, which fired one live round in (his girlfriend's) direction, ultimately killing her,” the arrest report states.
Police said Boyleau then called 911 to report he had “accidentally shot his girlfriend” at his home.
Ocala police found Polina dead from a gunshot wound to the head, with a handgun in her lap and a rifle near the scene.
Boileau, a former deputy sheriff for eight years, was arrested and charged with manslaughter, and a search of his home uncovered physical evidence that corroborated his account of the incident, police said.
The sheriff's office said he was fired shortly after the shooting. WeshIt was confirmed that the gun used in the fatal incident was not his service weapon.
Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods said in a statement that the Ocala Police Department was assisted by his office, Fox reported.
“Tens of thousands of police officers perform their duties honorably every day,” Woods said, “but unfortunately, the tragic actions of a single officer impact the entire police community.”
Boyleault is being held without bail in the Marion County Jail.
