Boas are native to Central and South America, but are commonly kept as pets in the United States. According to the Florida Department of Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, boas are established and breed only in Miami-Dade County in Florida.

Boa constrictor attacks are rare, but last year a Pennsylvania man was killed by a pet snake.

A boa coiled around a 27-year-old boy and suffocated him to death. Police shot the snake to save its owner, who died from his injuries.

The cause of death was anoxic brain injury due to asphyxiation caused by constriction.
