Florida family arrested in Fort White for child abuse and punishment

In Florida, four adults reportedly held nine children in a mobile home, confining them in makeshift cages and subjecting them to harsh punishments, including vinegar spray. This disturbing situation came to light on July 3, revealed by the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.

The children, aged between 7 and 16, included five biological kids, four of whom were allegedly part of a private adoption process from Arizona.

On July 22, Brian Matthew Grifez (47), Jill Elizabeth Grifez (41), Darrin Russell Grifez (21), and Liberty Ann Grifez (19) were arrested and charged with aggravated child abuse.

Authorities were alerted to these concerns when church officials reported at a camp in Branford, Florida, that one child was found with a functioning electric stun gun. Brian claimed it was merely a toy, but authorities confirmed it was indeed real.

While conducting a wellness check, police noticed that the four adopted children were busy with chores while the biological children were watching TV. The situation raised significant alarms about the children’s treatment.

The four adults had moved from Arizona to this mobile home in Columbia County, a remote area 35 miles northwest of Gainesville. The home, built in 2001, had only changed hands recently.

Reports suggest that the Grifez family had secured children beneath a bunk bed by using plywood to stop them from escaping and also punished them with vinegar and unprescribed medications. Jill allegedly inflicted pain by pushing plywood sheets over the kids.

Brian was also noted to have used a cane against one of the children, being careful not to leave marks. Authorities heard claims that the kids were instructed to lie about their living situation and had not received proper schooling in reading or writing.

One teen, now 14, told investigators that the children were often trapped under bunk beds that were screwed together to form cages, only released for meals. This teen expressed a strong desire to play and shared the discomfort of waiting until morning to use the bathroom.

He indicated that he was functionally illiterate, having not attended school in years. A 14-year-old girl revealed that she hadn’t learned to read and had not known her birthday.

In a further troubling revelation, one child had transitioned from living with biological parents in Arizona to this foster situation in Florida, expressing a desperate plea to her mother to get her out.

The biological mother even alleged sexual assaults involving one of her children, as cited in court documents.

The four adults are currently held in the Columbia County Detention Facility, with bond amounts reaching $500,000 for Brian and $1.5 million for Jill. Following this incident, Florida’s Department of Children and Families removed the children from their custody, and investigators from the Child Protection Team conducted interviews with all nine children prior to the arrests.
