The Florida House of Representatives passed a bill Friday that would lower the legal age to purchase a firearm from 21 to 18.
NRA-ILA report The bill, HB 1223, passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 76-35.
In Florida, it was legal for 18-year-olds to purchase long guns until shortly after the Parkland High School shooting on February 14, 2018. In response to the attack, Congress raised the minimum purchase age to 21.
The NRA filed a lawsuit alleging that Florida’s increase in the legal purchasing age violates the rights of 18- to 20-year-olds.
HB 1223 is designed to restore the legal age of purchase to 18 years old.
