Blue Origin Expands Operations in Florida

Blue Origin currently employs close to 4,000 individuals in Brevard County and has invested upwards of $2.3 billion in around 500 Florida suppliers. This investment is significantly boosting the local economy and creating jobs. Uniquely, Blue Origin remains the sole company manufacturing and launching rockets in Cape Canaveral. Their presence is also fostering the development of new skills among Florida’s technical workforce.

Over the past eight years, Blue Origin’s manufacturing and operational footprint has more than doubled, now encompassing 11 sites across Brevard and Orange counties. These include places like Merritt Island, Cape Canaveral, Titusville, Melbourne, and Orlando. The company has committed more than $3 billion to facility and infrastructure improvements, including the renovation of 36 historic launch complexes at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.

The recent expansion in Florida is primarily driven by rising customer demand and collaboration with NASA to return humans to the Moon. Blue Origin is swiftly progressing its Lunar program to ensure the necessary hardware is available for landing cargo and crew on both the Moon and Mars.

A notable feature of this expanded footprint is the newly inaugurated Lunar Plant 1, dedicated to the Blue Moon Mark-2 (MK2) Lunar Lander and Transporter. Both vehicles are actively contributing to NASA’s Human Landing Systems program. Situated in the modern Rocket Park near the Kennedy Space Center, Lunar Plant 1 is part of the MK2 assembly and testing facility. This year alone, it will see the initiation of construction on three new buildings. Additionally, Transporters are being tested within this facility, designed to handle 100 tons of fuel from Earth’s orbit to the Moon and 30 tons from Earth to Mars. Plans are also in motion for a second facility in Cape Canaveral, Lunar Plant 2, where the first two single-fire Blue Moon Mark-1 (MK1) cargo moon landers are being developed.

Rocket Park is on track to finish the new chemical processing facility this fall, alongside the expansion of the main assembly building to accommodate a new Glenn payload fairing and two automated fiber placement machines for adapter production.

Apart from the growth in workforce and manufacturing capabilities, Blue Origin is dedicated to investing in future generations. Their nonprofit initiative, Club for the Future, has connected with about 700,000 students and 55,000 educators in Florida since 2019 through outreach, curriculum, programming, and partnerships.
