Florida’s top law enforcement officer has warned the Orlando mayor that he could be removed from duties if he implements immigration laws passed by the town’s city council.
In 2018, Orlando approved a local rule entitled “Trust Act,” which aimed to turn Orlando into a sanctuary city. But state officials do caveat Orlando says that sanctuary policies are illegal in Florida, according to WJXT-TV.
Florida Attorney General James Usmier jumped on social media Monday to warn Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer that Sanctuary City’s policies were “invalidated” when Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis signed statewide law in 2019.
“Today, I sent a letter to @orlandomayor reminding him that the sanctuary policy “Trust Act,” adopted by the city in 2018, is invalid under the 2019 law signed by @govrondesantis.
“In Florida, sanctuary policies are not acceptable or legal,” reads Uthmeier’s letter. “Failure to comply with state law may result in appropriate penalties enforced, including but not limited to orders, declarative or injunctive relief and removal from duties by the governor.”
Mayor Dyer responded with his own letter claiming that he and his administration had no intention of “involving federal or state law,” and that he and his city “have ice in the Memorandum and Agreement 287(g) Task Force Model.” Dyer wrote:
In the process of being trained with our OPD officers and ice to provide assistance in that direction. We assure you that we continue to use our best efforts to support federal immigration law enforcement as state law as ELLs. I can provide additional information at any time and assist you and your office.
Despite his claims of being a follower of the law, Dyer also cultivated a reputation as a social justice warrior who wanted to protect Orlando’s illegal aliens.
For example, when Dyer was leading, the city passed the Trust Act to cheer immigration acts. South Florida Sun Sentinel It has been reported at that time.
The dyer was uniform Celebrated By the NBA in 2021 as “Social Justice Game Changer.”
