Florida Panthers' captain Aleksander Barkov leaves Sharks game with seeming leg injury as fans worry

The Florida Panthers put up a strong fight in San Jose, coming back from a three-goal deficit in the second period and netting two goals in the third. However, they ultimately lost in overtime.

While they did manage to secure a point in this game, the aftermath could be concerning for the team.

During the second period, captain Aleksander Barkov took a hard fall and left the ice due to what appeared to be a knee injury. He looked visibly upset as he made his way to the locker room.

Barkov was able to skate and walk afterward, but there are growing concerns that the injury might be worse than first thought. A doctor familiar with hockey injuries mentioned online that an ACL tear could be a possibility.

Coach Paul Maurice couldn’t confirm the extent of the injury during the postgame press conference, but fans in Florida are understandably anxious. Last season, an ACL tear had sidelined Barkov for the entire year.

It seems this current injury may not be related to the previous one, but one can’t blame fans for fearing the worst.

Just over a year ago, the Panthers were favorites heading into the Stanley Cup Finals, even being viewed as potential three-time champions, a feat not seen since the New York Islanders in the early ’80s.

Then, during a regular practice as training camp wrapped up, Barkov’s leg twisted awkwardly while he was on the ice.

From that point, the team struggled to recover, as injuries to other key players intended to support their captain led the Panthers to miss the playoffs for the first time since 2019.

If Barkov is set to miss more time, it will be interesting to see how the Panthers rearrange their lineup. Players like Sam Bennett or Anton Lundell might step up as top-line center. Meanwhile, speculation will likely grow regarding the possibility of signing Dylan Larkin from Detroit, should Barkov be placed on long-term injured reserve for salary cap relief.

Larkin has openly expressed his frustrations in Detroit, and the $10 million from Barkov’s potential absence could create room for movement to secure the American player.

Regardless, losing their captain, who’s been integral to their Stanley Cup-winning teams, would be a significant setback for the Panthers. Here’s hoping Barkov’s recovery is swift.
