Florida political figure joins DeSantis as his deputy

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has announced the appointment of State Senator Jay Collins, a well-known figure in state politics and a veteran who has made significant sacrifices, as his new lieutenant governor. Collins, often referred to as the “Chuck Norris of Florida Politics,” will make history as part of the nation’s only entirely veteran executive leadership duo.

During the announcement, DeSantis highlighted Collins’ bravery, particularly noting his commendable service that earned him a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart while serving as a Green Beret in combat zones. Collins, however, remarked that the governor should perhaps emphasize his own naval service a bit more.

For context, DeSantis served as a JAG officer in the Navy, specifically with SEAL Team 1 during the Iraq War under President George W. Bush.

Collins, who lost a leg in Afghanistan, has also played a pivotal role in significant operations, such as the evacuation of Jewish Americans from Israel following recent terrorist attacks. DeSantis praised him, saying that Collins was proactive, taking charge of the operation remotely from Tallahassee, and demonstrating strong leadership in various crisis scenarios.

In addition to his legislative responsibilities, Collins actively served the community during recent hurricanes, assisting evacuated residents through charitable efforts. DeSantis expressed his pride in Collins’ appointment and commended his contributions to conservative success in Florida.

After accepting his new role, Collins shared his background, indicating he did not come from wealth or privilege. Raised by his grandparents after losing his father at a young age, he expressed gratitude for the governor’s faith in him and his family.

The previous lieutenant governor, Janet Nunez, recently transitioned to a new leadership role at Florida International University.
