March Madness Heartbreak for Florida Gators Alumni

Sportswriter Talia Bahia experienced heartbreak after witnessing Iowa State’s upset over Florida State, the defending national champion and a top seed in the tournament. She referred to this loss as “might be the worst heartbreak ever.”

Bahia, a dedicated Gators fan and an alum, took to social media to express her feelings. In her posts, perhaps feeling a bit dramatic, she included a heartbroken emoji while reminiscing about happier times. “2025 vs. 2026,” she wrote.

She shared a video of herself celebrating Florida’s national championship win over the Houston Cougars last year, contrasting it with footage from her home as she watched the loss against Iowa. “This may be the worst heartbreak ever. No texting, no calling,” Bahia noted. Currently, she covers Notre Dame Athletics for ABC57 News in South Bend, Indiana.

“This is 100% worse than a breakup, maybe worse than a divorce,” she added, highlighting just how deep her feelings ran in the moment.

Bahia gained some fame last year for her coverage of the men’s basketball team as a student reporter for ESPN Gainesville, especially after a memorable locker room interview with Gators guard Bennett Andersen went viral.

Following the Gators’ 87-71 win against the University of Maryland in the Sweet 16, Bahia and Andersen had an interesting post-game exchange that captured the internet’s attention.

This past Sunday marked the first notable upset of the March Madness men’s tournament. Iowa’s Alvaro Folgueiras secured a dramatic win for Iowa State, hitting a crucial 3-pointer with just 4.5 seconds left, clinching a 73-72 victory over the Gators.

Prior to this heart-wrenching game, the Gators had showcased their strength, recording one of the largest margins of victory in NCAA Tournament history with a 114-55 win against Prairie View A&M.
