Rep. Carlos Gimenez, R-Florida, suggested on Wednesday that Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) should take a “head check” for claiming humans can control the weather.
“Humans cannot create or control hurricanes.” Posted by Jimenez on X When Hurricane Milton hit my home state. “Anyone who thinks they can do it needs to have their head examined.”
“Certainly we can control the weather,” Greene wrote on social media platform X last week as many Southern states began to respond to the effects of Hurricane Helen.
“It's ridiculous for anyone to lie and say it's impossible.” Her post read:
In recent days, Green has posted a number of other claims on his page that the storm was a hoax.
Greene's post is not the first time a Georgia lawmaker has posted about the weather. In April, she defended her claim online that solar eclipses and earthquakes were signs from God telling people to repent.
Hurricane Milton is hurtling toward Florida's west coast. It is expected to make landfall late Wednesday, bringing life-threatening storm surge.
This is the second major storm in recent weeks. Much of the Southeast is still recovering from Hurricane Helen. The storm's aftermath has led to a flood of misinformation online, with leaders warning that it is complicating the already difficult recovery and response process.
Republicans, including former President Trump, have baselessly claimed that the government is withholding aid from Republican hurricane victims and redirecting aid to immigrants. These claims have been denied.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) “Response to Hurricane Rumors” pageusers can see rumors that turned out to be false about authorities' response efforts against both Helen and Milton.
The White House has launched a Reddit page with official updates on Hurricane Milton and the Biden administration's ongoing response and recovery efforts.
The Hill has reached out to Green for comment.
