Arrest Made in Florida Synagogue Fire

A suspect has been apprehended relating to a fire at a synagogue in Florida, which police are investigating as both arson and a hate crime, according to authorities on Monday.

Blake Richard Hoover, a 31-year-old from Charlotte County, faces charges of arson and criminal mischief connected to the blaze that occurred at the Chabad synagogue in Punta Gorda on Friday, as stated by Punta Gorda police in a news release.

Emergency responders arrived at the synagogue shortly before 11 PM after a fire alarm was triggered, finding flames emerging from behind the building. Firefighters acted quickly to extinguish the fire, which was confined to one room.

No one was inside the building during the incident, and fortunately, there have been no reported injuries.

Investigators found that accelerants were used to ignite a fire in the rear wall of a classroom. Additionally, the letter “J” had been spray-painted on walls and sidewalks around the property.

This fire ignited just days before Rosh Hashana, a significant Jewish holiday, prompting investigations into its nature as a possible hate crime.

On Monday morning, one of Hoover’s family members provided tips to investigators suggesting his possible role in the fire. Soon after, Punta Gorda police were notified by the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office, which was already looking into a different matter involving Hoover as another family member raised suspicions regarding the synagogue incident.

Following discussions with Hoover and a witness, police executed search warrants in his bedroom, vehicle, and on his electronics.

Subsequently, Hoover was arrested and taken to the Charlotte County Jail.

Punta Gorda Police Chief Pamela Smith labeled the act as a “scourge,” expressing her condolences. She remarked, “Our hearts are out,” adding that they hoped the arrest brought some peace during the high holy days.

Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Plumel also commended the collaboration between the detectives and the Punta Gorda police, emphasizing the community’s swift action to ensure safety and maintain the right to worship freely. “We don’t sit daze; our community takes immediate action,” he asserted, highlighting the dedication to community safety in Charlotte County.
