Florida Teacher Battles for Classroom Poster
A teacher at a Florida high school is taking a stand after being directed to take down a poster featuring Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, from her classroom. William Logans, who teaches honors general law and economics at Horizon High School in Orange County, expressed his frustration, stating that he feels unfairly singled out.
Logans noted, “There are many political posters and flags displayed in teacher classrooms, so it’s puzzling why I’m being targeted specifically—perhaps because Kirk is a conservative figure.” The poster included inspirational quotes from Kirk, who was tragically assassinated at a speaking engagement in Utah on September 10.
After a student filed a complaint about the poster, officials from the Orange County School District instructed Logans to remove it. According to Logans, school officials admitted the poster did not contain controversial content but emphasized Kirk’s status as a divisive political figure as the reason for its removal.
Interestingly, Logans mentioned that other posters highlighting historical icons like Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and Ronald Reagan remained in the classroom. He has since lodged a complaint against the school for “viewpoint discrimination,” with his lawyer, Anthony Sabatini, arguing that the treatment of Logans is unjust.
School authorities maintain that their decision aligns with a memo from the Florida Board of Education about online posts by educators following Kirk’s murder. Anastasios Kamousas, the Florida State Board of Education Commissioner, commented, “If an educator’s personal views are shared publicly and result in students feeling unwelcome, it might violate certain regulations.” There was some confusion, however, as Kamousas later clarified that the memo was partly aimed at a teacher who made negative remarks about the circumstances surrounding Kirk’s assassination.
Kirk’s death sent shockwaves through the nation, with many mourning his passing, though it has not gone without celebration from some individuals on the left. In a related incident, reports indicate that a South Carolina teacher lost his job for saying, “America has grown,” in reference to Kirk’s assassination, while an Idaho drag queen teacher resigned after rejoicing over it.
Mike Benz, the executive director of the Foundation for Freedom Online, remarked that the demographic celebrating Kirk’s assassination largely comprises educators and academics. He suggested that this trend might impact future funding for educational institutions.
