Florida teen bitten during lifeguard training camp: ‘Shark capital of the world’

Officials with the Volusia County Beach Safety Department (VCBS) confirmed to Fox News Digital that a 14-year-old boy was bitten on the leg by a shark during a lifeguard training camp in Florida on Monday morning.

Authorities said a 14-year-old boy was in the water at Ponce Inlet, a beach just north of the pier, when he was bitten on his right calf about 11:15 a.m. Monday.

VCBS officials said the boy was attending a junior lifeguard camp.

Witnesses said the boy jumped into the water and landed on top of the shark, which then attacked him.

Witnesses said the shark was a 4-5 inch blacktip reef shark, a common species on beaches in the area.

Authorities said the boy was treated at the scene and taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening lacerations.

According to the report: Florida Museum of Natural History International Shark Attack File, Florida, and Volusia County in particular, is the shark capital of the world.

Not including Monday’s attack, there have been 351 attacks in Volusia County alone since 1882.

Florida, with a total of 16 recorded shark bites, was followed by Hawaii, with eight recorded indiscriminate bites in 2023.

The report found that since 1926, most shark attacks have occurred in September, but July, August and October are also the most common months for attacks in Florida.

In early June, Walton County, Florida, closed several miles of beaches after two consecutive shark attacks.
