A 34-year-old man is facing allegations of abandoning a stolen vehicle and hiding from law enforcement in a resident’s garage in Orange Park, Florida, on a recent Monday afternoon, according to WJAX-TV. Situated about 30 minutes south of Jacksonville, this incident began when the Clay County Sheriff’s Office was informed about the stolen car shortly after 3:30 PM. Deputies located the vehicle within five minutes at the intersection of Blanding Boulevard and Camp Francis Johnson Road.
The suspect fled the scene, colliding with two sheriff’s patrol vehicles and another car, but fortunately, nobody was injured. Two individuals exited the vehicle along Blanding Boulevard and ran in different directions, prompting a foot chase by officers.
Authorities confirmed that a female passenger was apprehended quickly, while the male driver continued to evade capture. He reportedly traversed several backyards before entering a detached garage on Grafton Drive.
WJAX stated that the male suspect attempted to conceal himself in this garage. However, upon entering, he was confronted by the homeowner, who was armed. Sheriff Michelle Cook informed WJAX that the homeowner “intervened and actually shot the suspect who had entered his detached garage.” The suspect suffered a gunshot wound to the leg.
First aid was provided by deputies, and the suspect was transported to a local hospital; there are no outstanding suspects in connection with this case.
The suspects have been identified as William Tracy White Jr. and Amanda Jean Strickland, according to WJAX. A neighbor, Anita Jones, recounted her shock, noting that she initially thought someone might have died. She mentioned that nothing of this nature had ever occurred since she moved into the neighborhood four years ago.
“I can’t believe it happened here,” Jones remarked. “If they stole a car, and he ran in my house, I’d shoot him too. Good for him.”
As for White, he is reported to have two ongoing warrants for grand theft and armed robbery. Jail records indicate that he remained in custody on Tuesday, facing charges that include aggravated fleeing causing injury or damage and burglary, with a bond set at over $35,000. No jail records are available for Strickland, who is 32.
