Florida Woman Killed in Brutal Dog Attack
A 50-year-old woman in Florida was tragically killed by two aggressive pit bulls, a horrifying scene discovered by her devastated husband, who remarked, “The images will never leave my mind.”
Donnell Smith returned home in Brevard County shortly after one in the afternoon on Tuesday, having helped a neighbor. He noticed that his wife, Jodi Cowan, and their small dog were missing. Reports indicate that he then heard Cowan calling for help from a distance.
“I saw the two dogs drag my wife onto the road and fall into the grass in front of the truck,” Smith recounted.
Cowan was found lying on the grass, covered in blood and with bites all over her body, according to her husband.
It seems the dogs, known to terrorize the neighborhood, had struck again and seemed to try to pull Cowan away once more.
In a state of distress, Smith said, “I pulled out the knife and tried to stop her bleeding, swinging it with one hand and holding the blood with the other.”
“It was brutal. To see the woman you’ve loved for 25 to 30 years torn apart by just two animals…you’ll never forget that image.”
He called 911, and Cowan was rushed to the hospital, but sadly, she succumbed to her injuries just hours later.
“She loved people and loved dogs more than people. It’s just not right for her to go out like that,” Smith shared.
Surveillance footage captured Cowan walking her small dog down Bluebonnet Drive moments before being chased and attacked by the pit bulls. Cowan had reportedly helped free one of the dogs when its collar got caught on a fence, her husband explained.
“They must have been after our little dog. She went to the rescue with her own little dog to save it,” he noted.
Smith alleged that the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office was aware of the pit bulls’ history of aggression yet did very little about it.
“My wife lost her life because of it,” he asserted.
Neighbors confirmed to media outlets that the pit bulls were often left outside and had previously attacked others. One resident shared that he had been trapped in his car for half an hour due to the dogs, while another neighbor had called animal control out of concern and even bought pepper spray for defense.
According to reports, the two pit bulls have been taken by Animal Control, but no arrests have been made as of now. The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office has not commented on the situation.
