Parking Dispute Leads to Fatal Shooting in Florida
A man from New Jersey, who was a veteran of the Army, was shot dead during an argument over a parking space outside a Walmart in Florida.
Bert DiGuglielmo, a retired U.S. Army sergeant, was shot by an unidentified woman in North Lauderdale just before 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
Officials reported that the argument between DiGuglielmo, 62, and the woman escalated into a deadly confrontation.
Witnesses indicated that the woman claimed she acted in self-defense.
One witness, David Anderson, recounted, “As I was walking up, I heard a woman screaming. She screamed and said a lot of things.”
Video footage circulating on social media revealed the woman in a white shirt emerging from her car with a gun in hand, confronting DiGuglielmo, who was dressed in a gray shirt.
During their dispute, both individuals pointed at each other, with DiGuglielmo raising his arms in submission while standing in an empty parking space, as shown in the video.
It appears DiGuglielmo may have followed the woman around another vehicle, but when she aimed the gun, a shot was fired, resulting in him collapsing to the ground.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
DiGuglielmo’s sister noted that he was a decorated veteran who served in Operation Desert Storm. His social media profile indicated he was from Hammonton, New Jersey, serving as a combat nurse, combat medic, and tactical communications specialist.
“He was a Christian, a very good person and never hurt anyone,” said his brother, who chose to remain unnamed.
DiGuglielmo, living in Lauderhill, Florida, was also noted to have worked as a nurse, according to his sister.
The identity of the woman involved has not been disclosed, and the Broward County State’s Attorney’s Office will determine if any charges will be filed following the police investigation.
