A Florida woman went missing in Spain two weeks ago amid a bitter divorce. According to reports, her loved ones said they were worried because they had received “strange messages” from her before her disappearance.
Ana Knezevic, a Colombian-born American citizen, decided to travel to Europe after a bitter breakup with her Serbian husband, according to worried friends and family.
The 40-year-old Fort Lauderdale resident rented an apartment in Madrid in December and had been in regular contact with friends ever since.
But friends Sanna Rameau told WSVN. She was last seen by neighbors on February 2nd.
Rameau sent her a text message the day she disappeared, but she did not respond.
The next day, she received a message from Knezewicz saying that she had met a man on the street and felt an immediate “connection”.
She told Rameau that she was on her way to her home in the countryside, two hours away from Madrid, where there was no strong cell phone signal.
“I’ll call you when I get back,” she said.
An upset friend asks Ana to send her the destination address and asks if it’s a good idea to go out with the mysterious man she just met.
“On the Saturday afternoon after she disappeared, we received a very strange message from her mobile phone. I have to say from her mobile phone because I can’t believe it was her that sent it. According to the station, Rameau met a man on the street.
“She didn’t leave on her own,” Rameau said. “I don’t know by whom she was taken against her will.”
Other family members said they received strangely worded emails from Knezevic in Spanish but could not believe that she had sent them.
Her relatives have contacted Spanish authorities, who are currently investigating the incident.
Adding to the mystery, investigators found surveillance footage from Knezevic’s building showing a man wearing a black helmet spraying paint on two cameras.
“I’m living my worst nightmare. I’ve never felt pain like this in my life because I don’t know what happened to her, who hurt her and why.” said Rameau.
As the days passed, Ramo finally flew to Madrid to speak directly with Spanish authorities, but said the response was unsatisfactory.
She is now pleading with American officials to intervene.
“I just want her back. I want the American authorities to help me. There are Americans who have disappeared overseas, and no one in the United States is doing anything about it,” she said.
Knezevic’s husband is reportedly in Serbia.
