Florida Teen Arrested for Alleged Staged Kidnapping

A 17-year-old from Florida was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly orchestrating his own kidnapping and subsequently shooting himself in the foot to further the ruse. Law enforcement discovered that the frantic emails he had sent to his family were entirely fabricated.

Kayden Speight faces multiple charges, including filing a false report, discharging a firearm into a vehicle, and possessing a firearm as a minor. This intricate plot has drawn attention from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.

On September 25, Speight mysteriously vanished in Dunnellon, north of Tampa, prompting fears for his safety when officers located his abandoned truck, which had a bullet hole in the windshield.

Investigators uncovered a severely damaged cell phone, signs that suggested he had been dragged away from the vehicle into the mud, and what looked like bloodstains near the truck, the department reported.

Initially, authorities speculated that Speight had been kidnapped by “four Hispanic males” in a light-colored van, based on the content of his emails to relatives.

As the search intensified, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office deployed a helicopter and issued an Amber Alert to locate the missing teen.

However, the investigation took a turn when witnesses reported seeing Speight riding away on a bicycle.

Additionally, police revealed that Speight had purchased camping supplies at Walmart just before he went missing.

Detectives also found internet search history on Speight’s computer, which included queries about “non-painful blood sampling” and “Mexican cartels.”

“As the inquiry progressed, it became clear that Speight had previously expressed intentions of running away,” the police stated.

Speight was ultimately located on September 28, roughly 40 miles from where he had last been seen.

He reportedly sustained a “self-inflicted gunshot wound to the leg and a shattered femur,” both of which required medical attention, and authorities believe these injuries were part of his deceptive plan.

When found, he was in possession of a handgun and a bicycle.

The sheriff’s office noted that the initial details in Speight’s emails were proven to be completely fictitious. “His claims of being shot and abducted were quickly disproved,” they added.

Despite being confronted by law enforcement, Speight did not admit to fabricating the incident. Following the investigation, a warrant for his arrest was issued, and he is now in the custody of the Juvenile Justice Department.
