Fmr RNC Chair McDaniel: I Do Not Support Freeing January 6 Convicts

Former Republican National Committee Chair and NBC News contributor Ronna McDaniel said Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that the 2020 election was “problematic.”

Host Kristen Welker said, “One of Donald Trump’s first actions if re-elected to a second term will be to have him charged and convicted of crimes related to January 6th,” according to the citation. “The goal is to release those who have been released.” do you support it?

“Let me be clear: The violence that occurred on January 6th is unacceptable. It does not represent our country. It certainly represents my party,” McDaniel said. We should not attack the Capitol. We should not use violence. I said that day. I made a statement that day that this is unacceptable. If you are convicted of storming the Capitol, let it stand.”

“So, my question is, do you not agree with President Trump when he says he’s going to release them?” Welker said.

“I do not believe that the people who committed the violent acts on January 6th should be released,” McDaniel said.

She went on to say, “I think there should be no violence in our political discussions, whether Republican or Democratic, but I don’t agree with that. I disagree with him on many other points. I agree. Let’s close the borders. Let’s make sure people have good incomes. Let’s make sure we do a lot of great things, but on that note, let’s violently attack police officers on Capitol Hill and attack Congress. I don’t think the people who attacked the Capitol should be released.”
