Folarin Balogun nets two goals in USMNT's 3-1 victory over Paraguay in the World Cup

Historic Victory for Team USA in World Cup

In a remarkable achievement, the United States national soccer team made history by defeating Paraguay 4-1 in their first match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Southern California. This win is particularly significant as it marks the first time the U.S. has scored four goals in a World Cup game, and it’s also the first time since 1930 they have triumphed by a three-goal margin.

Folarin Balogun, a 24-year-old forward, stole the spotlight by becoming the first American to score multiple goals in a World Cup match since the event’s inception. The game kicked off with a bang, as the U.S. took an early 3-0 lead, showcasing their dominance right from the start.

Balogun’s remarkable performance continued when he added two goals before the first half concluded, exhilarating the crowd. The first came within the first seven minutes, courtesy of an own goal from Paraguay’s Damian Bobadilla, giving the U.S. an early lead. Balogun then scored his first-ever World Cup goal in the 30th minute, followed by another just before halftime, firmly establishing his presence on the field.

Despite a goal from Paraguay in the 73rd minute, American captain Christian Pulisic’s injury added some tension to the match. Yet, Gio Reyna sealed the victory with a fourth goal in the dying seconds, securing three points for the U.S. in the World Cup standings.

This match not only marked a milestone for Balogun, who was raised in London and trained at Arsenal’s academy, but it also signifies a turning point for American soccer as they look forward to their first World Cup competition in three decades. He had previously been torn between representing the U.S. or England but ultimately felt compelled to choose the American team, swayed by the support he received online.

Now, with Balogun emerging as a key player, the U.S. team is off to a promising start in the World Cup journey.
