Folarin Balogun pledges commitment to the USMNT for the upcoming World Cup

Balogun Reflects on USMNT’s Early Exit from World Cup

Folarin Balogun is aware that the U.S. men’s national team has exited the 2026 World Cup sooner than expected.

Still, the standout striker hasn’t lost hope. He firmly believes that the USMNT will return in four years, perhaps even stronger than before.

Emerging as a key figure, Balogun also found himself at the center of the controversial red card incident during the tournament. On a recent evening, he took to X to share his thoughts regarding the team’s elimination.

In a heartfelt message the day after their 4-1 defeat to Belgium in the Round of 16, he wrote, “First World Cup…waiting four years to compete at the highest level our sport has to offer is tough. I want to say I’m sorry to our fans because we didn’t do enough when it mattered most and let them down. We know American soccer is only going to grow; the belief, talent, and passion are all on the rise. Our best days are ahead. The future belongs to those who never stop.” He added, “Why not us? For the country, for the flag.”

Born in Brooklyn to Nigerian parents while they were visiting, Balogun grew up in London and initially represented England before switching allegiance to the United States in 2023.

His World Cup journey started off impressive, scoring two goals against Paraguay and netting the decisive goal against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32.

However, early in the second half of the Bosnia game, he accidentally stepped on Tarik Muharemovic’s ankle. A video assistant review concluded that his actions warranted a red card, leading to his dismissal from the match and a suspension for the next game. This situation took a turn just a day before the Round of 16 against Belgium, as FIFA reversed the decision.

Amidst the chaos, President Donald Trump stated that he had spoken with FIFA president Gianni Infantino. While Infantino confirmed the conversation, he mentioned it didn’t affect the reinstatement decision for Balogun.

Regardless of any influence from the red card incident, Belgium capitalized on their momentum, securing a 4-1 victory, even managing to poke fun at Trump with their signature celebration dance during their final goal.

Belgium’s coach Rudi Garcia expressed gratitude for the chance to speak with Balogun after the match, emphasizing that the incident wasn’t the striker’s fault. “He’s not to blame,” Garcia stated. “I really appreciate his intentions in coming to see me. I’m grateful for this player.”
