Sen. Ron Johnson Critiques Food Stamp Program
During a recent appearance on a show, Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) expressed his views on the food stamp program, originally expanded under former President Barack Obama, labeling it a failed initiative that fosters dependency.
Host Mike Slater highlighted the fact that around 42 million Americans are currently relying on food stamps, raising concerns about potential losses by the month’s end due to a Democratic government shutdown. He remarked, “We can talk about that. But I’m also concerned about the 42 million Americans on food stamps.”
Slater posed a question: “Are Republicans trying to pull this country out of the welfare mess that is the food stamp system?” Johnson responded by discussing amendments made to a significant bill, noting President Obama’s expansion of eligibility for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
“Historically, we’ve provided food stamps to 6 to 12 percent of the population, depending on economic conditions,” Johnson explained. “In tough times, it goes up to 12 percent, but in good times, it shrinks back to 6 percent. Obama set it around 12, 13, or 14 percent, and it hasn’t decreased much since.”
The senator emphasized that implementing work requirements is essential for curbing the program’s growth. “This isn’t a sign of success, is it? 42 million people can’t feed themselves. It indicates a failure in government planning, creating dependency,” he stated.
He further connected the issue to Medicaid expansion, referring to it as “Obamacare on top of Medicaid.” Johnson pointed out that the U.S. spends $9 for every dollar on health care, which incentivizes dependency rather than encouraging self-sufficiency. “Around 20 percent of working-age men are permanently unemployed because of these systems. We need to ensure people can work, access healthcare, and purchase their own food.”
Johnson asserted that government intervention only exacerbates the problem. “We’re not making healthcare more affordable; rather, we’re fostering dependency on federal assistance,” he said. “Sadly, many young people are trapped in a cycle of gaming, food stamps, and healthcare through Medicaid expansion. This situation is troubling, and it’s something society needs to recognize.”
