Young Fisherman Rescues Shark at Hermosa Beach
A dramatic video has emerged showing a young fisherman diving into the rough waters of Southern California, battling a shark and ultimately freeing it from his fishing line.
Kevin Huang, a 20-year-old, was fishing at Hermosa Beach around 9 a.m. when a shark caught on his line, pulling him into the surf. Witnesses noted how beachgoers rushed towards the scene to help the struggling predator.
As the waves crashed around him, Huang got incredibly close, attempting to cut the line tangled in the shark’s mouth.
In the background, people wondered if the shark was still alive. After being tossed about by the strong current, Huang bravely grabbed the shark’s tail and guided it back to safety, earning cheers from onlookers.
An eyewitness, Stephen Copeland, shared, “I saw a bunch of people over there so I ran down like something was happening. He was in his underwear…he mentioned it was his second catch of the day.”
Fortunately, Huang only suffered minor cuts and scrapes. Onlookers hinted that they might think twice about fishing at the pier, given the surge in shark sightings.
One local fisherman, George Lam, expressed uncertainty about returning to the area regularly, noting, “We mainly target small fish here, but something bites right away.”
Research from California State University Long Beach indicates that juvenile great white sharks, while often spotted near shore, generally pose a low risk to beachgoers as they mostly feed on smaller fish.
