Footage captures two young boys, 7 and 9, with a loaded firearm confronting New Mexico deputies in a stressful standoff.

Standoff Involving Young Boys in New Mexico

A recent video has surfaced showing two boys, aged seven and nine, engaging in an armed standoff with law enforcement in New Mexico.

In the footage, both children, clad in pajamas themed around “Minecraft” and “Star Wars,” are seen manipulating handguns loaded with ammunition.

As the nearly seven-minute recording progresses, the boys appear to wrestle over control of a gun.

A woman can be heard on the video urging, “Put it down, baby. Put it down.”

Officers on the scene attempted to de-escalate the situation by instructing the children to drop their weapons and approach them calmly.

After more than five minutes of tense standoff, police discharged a warning shot, prompting one boy to aim his weapon at the officers.

Law enforcement shouted commands for the boy to surrender, while the other child took cover behind the air conditioning unit.

Another warning shot was fired as both boys sought refuge between the unit and the house, allowing officers to approach and disarm the boy carrying the gun.

The sheriff’s office noted that the drone technology used during the incident helped in monitoring the scenario, providing vital updates that helped avoid a potentially dangerous encounter.

“Without the drone program, we might have been at a disadvantage,” remarked Bernalillo County Sheriff John Allen.

He emphasized the complex nature of juvenile crime, public safety, and mental health issues, stating that steps are being taken to better engage with youth involved in firearms.

Interestingly, Allen mentioned that the department had been called to the boys’ household over 50 times due to ongoing concerns with their behavior.

While talking about the implications of the boys’ actions, Allen noted that had they been older, the conversation around the incident might have been different.

Michael Lucero, from the Behavioral Health Unit, indicated that they would offer support to the family, addressing the challenges they face and running evaluations for the children.

Daniel Smith, who is a family case agent, commented on the environment in which the children were raised, indicating familiarity with their behavioral patterns and suggested that the issue has been acknowledged.

While the boys were not arrested or charged, the origin of the firearms remains unclear. However, the police have seized the weapons post-incident.

Sheriff Allen stated that there seems to be a background of firearm training for the boys, and the investigation continues with potential charges against the parents being considered.

In a broader context, Allen pushed back against calls for the arrest of such young children, stressing the importance of finding constructive solutions rather than punitive measures. He pointed out the necessity of viewing the issue from various angles.
