Disturbing doorbell video captures the moment when town officials in New York shot and killed a DoorDash delivery driver seeking directions.
The New York State Police are investigating John J. Reilly III, 48, an elected highway supervisor and licensed firearm dealer, for shooting a 24-year-old driver who had stopped outside his home on May 2.
In the video, which was first shared by News12, Reilly steps out of his front door and looks for directions from several nearby homes before he fires multiple shots at the delivery driver’s vehicle.
“Go!” Reilly yells in the clip after firing a warning shot, then continues shooting as the car attempts to drive away.
The police reported that the driver tried to escape but ended up colliding with Reilly’s vehicle.
On another doorbell camera, the young man is seen pleading for assistance, saying he needed help before he later collapsed at home and was rushed to the hospital.
Authorities noted that the driver was not behaving suspiciously and was “just doing his job.” New York State Police Colonel Joseph Korek commented that there’s no evidence suggesting the victim had any harmful intentions; he was simply trying to deliver food.
The driver’s family recounted his unfortunate interaction, stating he tried to confirm the order before Reilly told him to leave and then shot at him as he drove away.
Reilly, who is a federally licensed firearms dealer, faces charges including first-degree assault and illegal possession of a firearm. He is currently held at the Orange County Jail on a $500,000 bond.
Despite the incident, Reilly has shown no signs of resigning from his position. Chester’s Town Director Brandon Halldridge stated that the town board does not dictate Reilly’s future as highway superintendent.
The investigation has been taken over by the New York State Police after the Chester Police Department declined to handle the case.
