New footage has been released from the incident at Manchester Airport earlier this week, which could undermine perceptions of police brutality and racism that sparked Muslim protests in Rochdale.
New CCTV footage from Manchester Airport, taken before a video of a police officer kicking a man in the head as he fell to the ground went viral, shows a heated argument between two men and police officers.
The new footage is Published On Friday evening Manchester Evening NewsThe video appears to show 19-year-old Fahil Muhammad Ammas (who was later kicked in the head) allegedly punching a female officer in the face, breaking her nose, before appearing to punch a second female officer, knocking her down.
Meanwhile, his brother Ahmad appears to have punched the male officer several times, knocking him to the ground, before Fahil joins in, punching and choking the officer before being shot with a taser by one of the female officers.
Reacting to the new footage, Reform MP Lee Anderson said: Said“This is horrible. These animals should be locked up. I stand by what I say.”
After the incident at the airport, Anderson Said BBC: “The message I’m hearing loud and clear from my constituents is that they are tired of seeing police dancing around on rainbows, being nice to people and running away from rioters. They want the police to do their job. I think the officers yesterday should be praised. In fact, I’d like to give them medals.”
“If there’s a clear danger — if people are trying to take away a police officer’s gun, if people are breaking a female police officer’s nose, if they’re dragging an officer to the floor, if they’re sending an officer to the hospital — then I think officers have a right to take that offender into custody as quickly as possible and to use all available means to do so,” he said. Added.
Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, was quick to condemn Mr Anderson’s initial comments as “irresponsible” and said the initial video of Mr Ammas being kicked after falling to the ground was “deeply disturbing”.
After the additional footage was released, Burnham Said“This is a modern phenomenon. When a video comes out, wherever it is, it gets out there and everyone becomes an expert on it and makes a clear-cut decision, saying, ‘I know exactly what happened.'”
“But life isn’t like that. The risk is that there will be consequences from those judgements that will impact the community and affect public order. My point is that politicians should not be complicit in rushing to those judgements.”
“These situations can be dangerous and people’s careers are at stake in these situations. We all sympathize with the officer injured in this incident. There are many different things that come together and there is a lot we can learn from this incident.”
Four men were arrested on suspicion of disorderly conduct and assault after Wednesday’s incident, but have since been released on bail. Amass claims he developed a “cyst” on his brain as a result of the altercation, while the officer who kicked Amass in the head has been suspended and is reportedly under criminal investigation for assault.
The incident sparked Muslim protests in the area, including outside Rochdale police headquarters, with some chanting “Allah is great” over what they called “racist” police behaviour. [God is great/Our God is the Greatest] and “Fuck the police.”
