Grambling State’s Rivalry Game Ends in Halftime Brawl

During Saturday’s intense showdown between Grambling State and Bethune-Cookman, the excitement was overshadowed by a significant brawl that erupted at halftime.

On Monday, the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) revealed that over 20 players—nine from Bethune-Cookman and 18 from Grambling State—have been suspended following the incident.

In a statement, SWAC Commissioner Dr. Charles McClelland expressed his disappointment, stating that such behavior has no place in the conference or in collegiate sports. He emphasized a strict zero-tolerance policy against unsportsmanlike conduct that contradicts the values of good sportsmanship expected within the league.

Video footage shared by ESPN showed the chaos as players exchanged punches while coaches and officials attempted to intervene. The game itself remained tight until halftime, with Grambling State leading 24-20, ultimately winning the match 31-23.

The SWAC confirmed that three of the 27 players involved will serve two-game suspensions, while the others will receive one-game suspensions.

In addition to player suspensions, Grambling State has been fined $40,000, and Bethune-Cookman will pay $25,000 due to the incident.
