Curt Cignetti’s Coaching Style at Indiana

Curt Cignetti has successfully led Indiana to its first national championship during his second year as head coach. Known for a no-nonsense coaching approach, Cignetti has made quite an impression, especially during spring practice held on Thursday. One of the highlights was the introduction of transfer wide receiver Nick Marsh, who had his own learning experience on the field.

Marsh, who transferred from Michigan State University, showed up at practice sporting gold cleats. While acknowledging Marsh’s impressive record with 1,311 receiving yards and nine touchdowns at Michigan State, Cignetti expressed his thoughts on the player’s choice of footwear. “I didn’t like the gold shoes he came out wearing today,” Cignetti said, suggesting it was a teachable moment. “He learned what it was to beat yourself. I don’t know if that happened to him often at Michigan State.”

Cignetti, reflecting on his current roster, pointed out that this team requires more effort from the coaching staff than his previous squads. They are still assessing players they expect to depend on next season. In addition to Marsh, TCU quarterback Josh Hoover is another necessary transfer for Indiana.

In January, Indiana celebrated a thrilling win over Miami in the College Football Playoff National Championship. As Cignetti described Marsh’s initial impression at practice, he viewed it as a wake-up call. “But he worked really hard and did a great job for us,” he added, emphasizing the importance of setting expectations early on.
