Ford Motor Co. is expanding production of its higher-margin gasoline-powered Super Duty pickup trucks at its Oakville, Ontario, assembly plant, which was meant to be an all-electric plant making only electric vehicles.
On Thursday, Ford CEO Jim Farley Announced The company said it will invest $3 billion to expand production of its F-Series Super Duty pickups to its Ontario plant. The pickups are also made in Kentucky and Ohio.
Investments are also planned for Ford’s Michigan plant.
“Super Duty is a vital tool for businesses and people around the world, and even though our truck plant in Kentucky and assembly plant in Ohio are operating at full capacity, they are unable to meet demand,” Farley said in a statement. “This move will benefit our customers and accelerate our Ford Pro commercial vehicle business.”
The $1.3 billion Oakville Assembly Plant was set to build EVs, but production of the electric three-row SUV has been delayed until 2027.
The news was announced by Farley recently Ford said building large electric pickup trucks and SUVs would be too costly and unprofitable for it and other automakers.
“These big EVs will never be profitable. Even with low-nickel LFP chemistry the batteries cost $50,000. They’ll never be affordable,” Farley said.
