Ford Motor Company has announced recalls for over 270,000 vehicles in the U.S. due to brake defects that may raise the risk of accidents, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The recall, which was submitted to federal agencies last week, affects approximately 223,315 Ford Expeditions and 50,474 Lincoln Navigators from the 2022 to 2024 model years.
Ford indicated that a faulty assembly process led to the front brake line possibly coming into contact with the engine air cleaner outlet pipe, which could result in brake line leakage.
This issue appears to stem from activities at the Kentucky truck factory, where it seems workers routing radiator hoses may have inadvertently bent the front brake line.
This misalignment leaves brake lines improperly positioned, making them susceptible to wear from contact with nearby engine parts.
Over time, such contact could wear down the brake line material, leading to cracks or leaks. Essentially, the brake lines may deteriorate from constant friction.
The recall report states that a leaking brake line can lead to unexpected brake pedal movement, which would slow down the vehicle less effectively. Should brake fluid be lost rapidly or completely, stopping distances would increase, raising the risk of a crash.
Ford began its investigation in February after noticing a spike in brake system warranty claims for the 2022 models.
Subsequent findings revealed that production changes made in November 2024 aimed at improving radiator hose placement should help avoid brake line interference in the future.
As of mid-April, Ford had received 45 warranty claims, two field reports, and two customer complaints concerning leaking front brake lines.
Interestingly, the company stated it has no knowledge of any accidents or injuries linked to this defect.
Owners of the affected vehicles will receive notification by mail between May 26th and May 30th, directing them to take their vehicles to a Ford or Lincoln dealership for inspection.
If necessary, dealerships will replace the brake lines or air cleaner outlet pipes for free. Additionally, customers can seek refunds for any prior repairs related to this issue.
Notifications to dealers began on Wednesday. For more details, affected customers can reach out to Ford’s customer service at (866) 436-7332.
