Ford Expands Kentucky Manufacturing with $1 Billion Investment

Ford has announced plans to enhance its manufacturing operations in Kentucky through a significant $1 billion investment to establish a new, advanced paint shop at its Kentucky Truck Plant.

This investment will lead to the creation of a modern paint facility, replacing the current one and contributing to the ongoing modernization of the Kentucky Truck Plant located in Louisville.

The new paint shop will incorporate upgraded technology aimed at delivering cleaner and more efficient paint quality, which, according to Ford, will enhance production efficiency while also promoting environmental sustainability.

The Kentucky Truck Plant is Ford’s largest and most lucrative manufacturing site, where it produces a vehicle approximately every 45 seconds. The plant is responsible for assembling notable models, including the F-Series Super Duty pickups, the Ford Expedition, and the Lincoln Navigator.

“Ford and Kentucky have had a strong partnership for over a century, and we’re committed to continuing that tradition for future generations,” stated Ford CEO Jim Farley. He emphasized that these investments reflect the company’s confidence in Kentucky’s workforce and its dedication to American manufacturing, believing that the future of mobility and energy is firmly rooted in the United States.

Ford also indicated that construction on the project is anticipated to begin later this year. Additionally, the company plans to hold a Family Open House at the Kentucky Truck Plant on September 13, aimed at showcasing the work and activities taking place at the facility to employees and their families.

Meanwhile, Ford’s nearby Louisville Assembly Plant is undergoing a major upgrade as well. The introduction of the new Universal EV Production System will be pivotal in supporting the production of the recently unveiled Ford Fathom, a midsize electric pickup truck set to debut in 2027. This investment is expected to transform the assembly plant into one of Ford’s most advanced and versatile manufacturing facilities.

Ford’s history in Kentucky dates back to 1913, when the first Model T was produced in Louisville. The state also hosts more than 6,000 Ford retirees, showcasing the company’s long-standing presence and impact in the region.

In a related development, Ford had previously committed $2 billion to the Ford Energy initiative, which aims to convert a former battery manufacturing site in Glendale, Kentucky, into a large-scale facility for producing battery energy storage systems.

A 2020 study from the Boston Consulting Group highlighted Ford’s annual contribution of $11.7 billion to Kentucky’s economy, with roughly 120,000 individuals connected to the company through employment in the state to Ford and its suppliers and dealers. Furthermore, a 2023 report from a University of Louisville professor identified Ford’s overall economic effect in Kentucky to exceed $33 billion, factoring in its extensive network of vendors and suppliers.
