Ford recalls more than 30K Mustangs due to steering issue

More than 30,700 Ford Mustangs are being recalled over an issue that could cause the steering wheel to turn unintentionally.

Automakers June 28th Recall Report The Mustangs that are at risk of unintended steering wheel rotation are 2022-2023 model years, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration was informed.

The recalled vehicles were manufactured between September 15, 2022 and April 5, 2023.

The recall states that “unexpected turning of the steering wheel may result in loss of vehicle control and increase the risk of a collision.”

There have been no reports of injuries or accidents caused by this issue.

“Our goal is to prevent quality issues from occurring in the first place,” Ford said in a statement to FOX Business. “And when quality issues do occur, we respond quickly with recalls and service actions, focusing on making it as easy as possible for customers to avoid an issue. We’re focused on improving both launch and long-term quality, and we’re already beginning to see improvements on both fronts.”

In its recall report, Ford said the issue was caused by an improperly calibrated secondary digital torque sensor in the steering gear, which the Michigan-based company said could be fixed with a software update.

Ford dealers will provide the updates free of charge, and Ford told FOX Business that participating dealers will allow affected customers to use the company’s pickup and delivery service to repair recalled vehicles.

Notifications will be sent out starting in early August.

Ford has sold the Mustang model for 60 years, and the iconic vehicle celebrated its 60th anniversary in mid-April. The company said at the time that more than 10 million vehicles have been purchased since the model’s debut.
