Ford announced Friday that it will cut production of the F-150 Lightning due to declining demand for electric pickup trucks.
The company announced that the number of shifts at its Rouge Electric Vehicle Center, which manufactures EV pickups, will be reduced to one shift starting April 1.

The move will affect approximately 1,400 employees at the plant, including 700 who will be transferred to the Michigan assembly plant. Some employees will be assigned to the Rouge Complex and other Ford facilities in southeastern Michigan, while others “will have access to special retirement incentive programs agreed to in the 2023 Ford-UAW contract.” said Ford.

The company is expanding its global operations to “optimize financial returns while making the most of a balanced lineup and offering customers the right mix of gasoline, hybrid and electric vehicles.” We are moving forward with our deployment in an agile manner.”
At the same time, the automaker announced it will begin hiring a third crew of 1,600 people to build the Bronco and Bronco Raptor SUVs and the Ranger and Ranger Raptor pickup trucks at its Michigan assembly plant.

The new crew to meet demand for these vehicles will include approximately 900 new hires, Ford said. The remaining 700 Rouge Complex employees will be transferred.
“We are leveraging our manufacturing flexibility to balance growth and profitability while offering our customers choice,” Ford CEO Jim Farley said in a statement. “We believe there is a bright future for certain consumer electric vehicles, especially with the upcoming launch of digitally advanced EVs and access to Tesla's charging network starting this quarter.”
