Forecasting the MLS Playoffs: Eastern Conference version

As of now, just four teams are still eyeing a spot in the MLS Cup final scheduled for December 6th. The match, taking place at a top-seeded location, features Philadelphia in the East and San Diego, a new addition, in the West, both eager for the championship title.

Let’s dive into the East Division matchups, highlight some key points, and make a few predictions on who might move forward to the conference finals.

3rd place Inter Miami FC vs. 2nd place Cincinnati FC

Inter Miami, surprisingly, dispatched Nashville SC, a team many had pegged as favorites this season. A large part of that success can be attributed to Lionel Messi’s influence. Scoring 29 goals, he’s already locked in the league’s Golden Boot and is a strong contender for MLS Player of the Year.

However, Cincinnati stands in Miami’s way, hoping to secure their semifinal spot with a victory in their two-leg battle against Columbus. They’re led by Evander, who, despite struggling this season, boasts better stats than Messi in several areas.

Prediction: While the league surely wants to see Messi and Miami succeed, Cincinnati’s impressive performance favors them. They advanced with a close 3-2 win at TQL Stadium, bolstered by their strong showing at home this season.

5th place New York City FC vs. 1st place Philadelphia Union

Few envisioned NYCFC reaching this stage, apart from perhaps a nod from history. The team has qualified for the conference finals and MLS Cup in three of the last five seasons. This time, Philadelphia’s attack, guided by Coach of the Year Bradley Carnell, is really ramping up the pressure.

Pay attention to two standout players. Forward Ty Baribeau excels in aerial duels and can adapt as needed, either holding up play or engaging directly with defenders. Indiana Vasilev plays a vital role, linking offense and Philadelphia’s robust defense.

That defense is crucial against talented forwards like NYCFC’s Alonso Martinez, who is known for his goal-scoring prowess and has significantly influenced recent matches against Philadelphia.

Prediction: The Union seems determined and is currently dominating at Subaru Park, which likely won’t change. Plus, goalkeeper Andre Blake is back after competing in the Jamaica qualifier and should be at full strength. It’s going to be a tough match for NYCFC, but I believe Philadelphia has what it takes to secure a spot in the finals with a 3-1 victory.
